Special Olympics classes have been run in West Auckland since the 90's. They began at the New Lynn Skateland. When the rink closed they moved to the hall at Olympic Park, and in 2005 the joined the City of Waitakere Club at the Big Top Recreation Centre in Henderson (beside the West Wave Centre). |

| By taking part in Rollersports the Special Olympians and their families can have pride and a sense of achievement that comes from completing something well. They also learn skills that include caring for their equipment, practice methods, sportsmanship and safety as well as the skating techniques and how the competitions work. | ![]() |

Skating strengthens muscles, increases joint flexibility and breathing capacity. It improves balance and posture, stimulates circulation and provides a non-impact exercise. It improves self-confidence, agility and co-ordination. | |
| Each programme is uniquely
choreographed to the skaters strengths, skills and ability. It provides
them the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends with
supportive competition. Skating provides fitness, fun and friendship and
can be a life long sport for those involved.
